Civils Estimators x 2. Additional requirements due to the continued expansion of this successful civils and groundworks contractor. To work on Groundworks and RC frames / podiums projects with a background in Groundworks or general Civils preferred. To work from the Reading area on work along the M4 / M3 / M1 corridors.

The Company:
Turning over some £60 million in a range of disciplines including site investigations, soil and water remediation, civil engineering, groundworks and reinforced concrete structures, this contractor works loosely with their blue chip clients.

Remuneration:
Salaries will be based on relevant experience and you can expect them to fall within the £40 to £60k range with substantial discretionary bonuses to 15% of salary.

The Estimator’s role:
• The management and successful delivery of the company’s tender enquiries and process in ensuring the returned tenders are competitive and meet the needs of the business in delivering the Company’s five year business plan.
• To work together with other parts of the company, including surveying and operational departments to ensure all tenders meet /exceed the requirements and expectations of the client.
• Dealing with risk management issues and developing good working relationships with design, consultant and client teams.
• To interface with the Pre-Contract, Design and Cost teams to participate with producing competitive, thorough, and well researched tenders.

Primary duties and responsibilities:
• Prepare and submit Proposals in a timely manner– Evaluate Tender Enquiry documentation, assess the resource, materials, engineering requirements and costs within a clients proposal and finalise and generate / submit documentation for tender approval in accordance with company procedures
• Analyse Tender Documentation – to assess the likely impact of the proposed terms and conditions and collate responses from Commercial Manager / surveyors. Acquire a thorough understanding of the tender documentation, the Client’s requirements / aspirations, and the required tender deliverables
• Carry out detailed site visits with key stakeholders to determine and mitigate risk to the business when submitting a tender
• Determine tender subcontract and material requirements, ensure that all necessary enquiries are secured via the buying Dept and check/validate enquiry returns.
• Liaise with consultants, contract Managers, clients and sub-contractors and support functions ensuring specifications, volumes, issues and risks are identified and agreed.
• Be able to present the tender proposals to the management team and the client and their representatives as and when necessary.
• Provide assistance in the preparation of additional proposals during the course of the Project – including liaising in respect of any feedback processes adopted under the guidance of the Estimating Manager.
• Utilise Estimating Assistant(s) effectively to progress the tendering process. Provide on-the-job Estimating training to other members of the Department as appropriate.
• Provide input into post-tender negotiations, and (as appropriate) Tender-Contract handover.

Qualifications, Skills, Knowledge and Experience expected as indicated:
• HNC in Civil Engineering / Appropriate degree / post graduate qualification
• In depth knowledge of estimating tools and techniques
• Knowledge of contract terms and conditions.
• Understanding of the impact and significance of the estimating role
• Ability to understand and interpret technical drawings and to highlight uncertainty
• A team player with the ability to communicate and influence at all levels of the organisation
• Pro-active and hands-on approach.
• Generates own ideas and develops others ideas for continued advancement
• Excellent data base and general IT skills
• The ability to critically analyse and evaluate,
• Proven strong negotiating and interactive style
• Sets demanding targets with determination to achieve and deliver them
• Uses problem solving and decision making skills
• Adopts an assertive and confident approach
• Adapts and responds to change
• Capable of working to strict deadlines, working on your own initiative, using analytical methods for rate build-ups and using computer estimating packages
• A competent user of standard office computer software.
• The ability to communicate effectively at all levels and possess a deep understanding of the market in which the Company operates, including an awareness of competitors and new
• experience in a estimating environment, working knowledge of multidisciplinary engineering projects
• Minimum of five years experience within a similar organisation
• On site experience
• Clean driving licence and access to a serviceable, appropriately insured vehicle.
• Flexible in approach to changing demands of business and working hours.
