Job Description
Network Rail has launched a programme to become 'World Class'. A key element of this programme is the Flag Ship Modular Switch and Crossing Programme. The Modular Switch and Crossing Team has been set up to fundamentally challenge and change the way rail point systems are design, manufactured and installed across Great Britain.
The team is made up of Network Rail personnel and key individuals who have been brought from across Europe to define and implement a world leading point renewal system.
This role provides an excellent opportunity for a team-player who can either bring existing experience or rapidly develop new experience within the team. Members of the team will help determine the approach to Switch and Crossing renewal for the next 30 years.
A broad appreciation of the interfaces between track, signal, rolling stock and electrification & plant would be useful. The ideal candidate will demonstrate knowledge of Switch and Crossing design, installation and maintenance.
Candidates will be required to work away from home stations on occasions since this is a national role and the development work is centred in London (Euston).
The Modular Switch and Crossing (S&C) Team
Network Rail has launched a ‘Flag Ship’ programme to drive a ‘step change’ improvement in the renewal of Switch and Crossings (S&C). A team has been set up to run this programme and fundamentally challenge and change the way rail point systems are designed, manufactured and installed across Great Britain.
The team will adapt techniques used in other countries and spread best practice across the UK. The emphasis is on simplification, pre-fabrication, automation and close management of the methods and processes used in specification, design, manufacture, assembly, installation and maintenance. The aim is to co-locate the team with a supplier in London during the design stage. Members of the team will be required to set up a new operation / facility to support the national renewals programme. The location of this operation will defined in the initial design stage, hence flexibility will be required.
The Role
This role will suit an enthusiastic and innovative track design engineer who is keen to take a leading role in the team and work closely with other disciplines. In this role you will develop an improved S&C to rapidly install S&C, reducing the time to replace existing units, whilst also improving cost efficiency, safety and quality. There will also be the opportunity to assist in the definition of business cases and implementation plans for any new methods. You will also be required to provide technical briefing and coaching support to engineers who will operate the new methods. Liaison will be required with our development partner, suppliers and regulatory bodies.
The role is ideally suited to someone interested in, and having practical experience of, working with point systems (design and testing in particular). You should be keen to develop new approaches to rapid install and commission S&C. A multifunctional perspective is a must. A broad appreciation of the interfaces between track, signal, rolling stock and electrification & plant would be useful, as would knowledge of Switch and Crossing design, installation and maintenance.
In return for your commitment, we offer ongoing training that will allow you to fulfil your full potential and plenty of scope for career development. But perhaps best of all, you can look forward to the satisfaction of knowing that you are making a difference to a vital national asset.
