Job Description

London based Local Authority requires a Senior Urban Designer. You will be responsible for providing the development control section with design advice on proposals, including taking part in negotiations, at all stages of the planning process. You will input to planning briefs and other guidelines, as well as providing the Traffic and Transportation Services with streetscape manual. The post will also involve some conservation based work, including commenting on planning applications. This is a key role as a leading designer adviser on city academies and school buildings, disposable sites, masterplans and other building projects. It involves work for and on expert panels as well as staff induction on design issues.
Main duties include:
1- Provide design input at appeals by contributing to appeal statements and represent the Council on design issues at Public Local Inquiries, Informal Hearings and Court Hearings together with liaison with the Government’s Planning Inspectorate.
2- Provide urban design input into planning briefs, design advice notes, design guides and area plans.
3- Help raise awareness of good urban design principles throughout the Council.
4- Ensure the application of all relevant legislation, regulation and guidance as appropriate.
5- Attend committee, public and other working meetings to present reports/to progress the work of the team and take instruction, as required.
6- Help ensure effective liaison with external agencies, statutory undertakers and landowners with responsibility for different elements of the streetscape
7- To use and assist others in the use of information technology systems to carry out duties in the most efficient and effective manner.
You will have a degree in Urban Design and/or Architecture and qualification or experience in planning. This is an initial 6 month contract with possibility of extending further.
