Job Description
This £1.2 billion, 10-year railway communications system project involves creating a modern and entirely new Fixed Telecommunications Network (FTN) for the railway, as well as introducing a single, national system of secure driver-to-signaller communications (GSM-R). This will lead to significant performance and safety benefits.
The project delivers:
A new national Fixed Telecom Network (FTN) to replace the existing life-expired network, which will support GSM-R and our operational and business telecoms needs; and
A new national radio system (GSM-R), which will provide secure voice and data communications over the whole of our infrastructure. GSM-R is also necessary to support the proposed adoption of the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) train control system
Detailed External Job Description
Carry out a cell review of selected lines of route in line with the project programme.
Produce coverage plots of every GSM-R base station.
Develop a geographical information system based on coverage plots and detailed designs.
Ensure that voice level coverage is achieved across the entire railway including tunnels and cuttings.
Evaluate alternative site locations to assist surveyors and the consents process.
Provide cell planning services to HQ.
Regularly report progress to Management.
Comply with work instruction FTN & GSMR/ENG/W1/005 – Radio Planning
