Job Title: Clinical Specialist II Sonographer
Responsible to: Clinical Specialist I Sonographer
Department(s): Ultrasound (100%)
Directorate: Radiology
Operating Division: Acute Operational Division
Job purpose:
To independently perform and report ultrasound examinations in obstetric, gynaecological, general and small parts both in-patients and outpatients. To train Radiology Registrars, Obstetric and gynaecological Registrars, alleviating Consultant Radiologists time constraints.
To manage ultrasound department resources to develop the service and implement organizational policies and protocols.
Supervise less experienced Sonographers, trainee sonographers and assistants to ensuring continuity of service delivery.
Dimensions:
areas: Patients ranging from paediatric to geriatric and routine to emergency are referred for ultrasound from GP’s, A&E, wards and ANC as both in-patients and out-patients.
Clinical activity: Approx 28,200 Ultrasound examinations annually across the Directorate.
Clinical provision: QMH 14 General and 9 obstetric sessions,
VHK 9 General sessions,
FP 21 Obstetric/gynae sessions.
NE Fife 4 general/Obstetric sessions.
Staff Responsibility: Take responsibility for the training of trainee sonographers, medical staff and
trainee Radiologists in the correct use of ultrasound equipment under the
guidance of the Clinical Specialist I Sonographer.
Direct and supervise the workload of the Sonographer in Ultrasound Direct and supervise the Radiography Assistant assisting in Ultrasound.
Direct and Supervise Student Radiographers on clinical placement in Ultrasound.
Knowledge, training and experience required to do the job:
Training/Experience
HPC Registration
D.C.R. or BSc in Radiography with a minimum of 2 years clinical experience in Radiography
Post Graduate qualification; Post Graduate Diploma in Medical Ultrasound (PG Dip) or equivalent (DMU)
Clinical experience
Minimum independent post graduate practice in highly specialised areas of abdominal, gynaecological, small parts and obstetric scanning
Evidence of CPD including attendance at short courses, in-house training and study days within specialised field
Evidence of clinical training and personal motivation
Ability to take responsibility and act in a supervisory capacity
Excellent communication skills
