Job Description

Carpenter / Handyman – Housing. Additional live requirement for an established construction company based near Croydon. The work is generally within a 10 – 15 mile radius of Croydon and is primarily new build Housing Association schemes.

Requirement. We are looking for a Carpenter / Handyman who would be totally responsible for carrying out the snagging work, fixing “Secure by Design, accredited access doors” and dealing with defects in the warranty period following handover and occupation.

The Projects. Ranging from 6 to 70 plus units, the various schemes have different requirements, so you will need to be adaptable and self motivated. There is a mix of RC, steel and predominantly timber frames providing decent flats with associated infrastructure for a local housing association. Ground floor basements and car parking with accommodation on the ground and upper floors. Traditional construction methods are used when following on from the timber frames to incorporate masonry and pre-cast floor slabs.

Carpenter / Handyman. You will ideally have a carpentry apprenticeship with a background in timber frame, residential developments, either working alone or as a team member on a larger scheme. Coming from a trades background you will probably have a minimum of 4 to 6 years site experience, have worked on a number of similar projects and be capable of taking on a snagging list and completing the tasks, reporting to either the Site Manager or a visiting Contracts Manager.

Qualifications. Ideally trade certificated and CSCS carded. You should have your own vehicle and hand tools and will have your travel costs paid at standard rates.

The Company. Involved in a mix of social and private housing, in new build and refurbishment sectors, specialise in finding and reclaiming sites. They have Design & Build capability, building a wide range of types and styles of development, including luxury executive homes, affordable housing and special housing for the disabled.

Conditions. Your working hours would generally be 0800 to 1700 or 0730 to 1630 on a 5 day week, with 20 days holiday per year of which 1 week is taken at Xmas. The hourly rate is £12.50 PAYE, though this is negotiable based on experience, for a 45 hour week with overtime paid for additional hours, plus expenses.
