Job Description

The Birmingham Bridges and Civil Structures Team is the Centre of Excellence for Highway Structures in the UK, this means any new highway bridge in the UK or Ireland will come through the Function Manager for Birmingham Bridges. If my team are to busy then it will be passed to one of our other major offices in the UK.
The Bridges team works closely with the Highways Sector which currently is 25% ahead of target on sales this financial year with work predominantly coming from the UK market. The Birmingham Bridges team also does structural work for the water and property sectors which are also ahead of targets this year.

The Birmingham Bridges Team is currently working on 3 Major UK projects, namely the M40 J15 and A45 Toolbar End Improvement Schemes for the HA under ECI with Morrison Construction which will continue to give the team work until 2013. We are also undertaking the Cat 3 check of the Tyne Tunnel in Newcastle which includes all structural aspects (bridges, cut and cover and immersed tube section).

Other current workload includes:
1. New build structural work and asset management via a Term Contract with Wrekin Construction for Staffordshire County Council

2. Work on Area 3 assisting Enterprise
3. Assessments and inspections of bridges and houses for the Plymouth Office
4. Support to the Birmingham Water Team with their new 5yr framework with Severn Trent

The team is currently 20 strong with future growth of the UK business expecting the team to grow to 30 over the next 3yrs.

Current Major opportunities include:
1. Bridge inspection and assessment in Northern Ireland
2. Major Highway and Rail Projects in Northern Ireland
3. Major Highways ECI projects in Wales
4. Prelim and detailed design of 2.5Km of Diaphragm walls and 4 bridges as part of a major road through the centre of Bahrain which is due to commence in Jan 09

5. Detailed design of an Immersed Tube Tunnel and Post-tensioned viaducts in Bahrain, supporting our Bahrain Office
6. Support on Major Rail projects to our Rail Centre of Excellence in Warrington
7. Support to our Property Sector currently working on one of the largest projects in the Middle East, In Dubai.
8. Long span bridge opportunities in India, Europe and East Asia

The Birmingham Bridges Team had a difficult start to the year with a lack of forward planning leading to a shortfall in workload and the requirement to reshape the team for the future. Over the last 3mths the team is back on target and will better all its targets for the financial year given current workload and depth of technical ability and leadership throughout the team.
