SUMMARY
To produce superior quality Engineering Design services to allow the company to minimise risks and maximise profits on Turnkey and Consultancy contracts.
In order to ensure the above the individual must produce mechanical design layouts taking due account of health and safety requirements, CDM design obligations and relevant legislative and regulative standards. Compliance with QA procedures, Client Specifications and Standards. The individual must ensure that mechanical plant design deliverables and drawings as well as procured plant and equipment are delivered on time and within budget.
Responsibility: The Senior Mechanical Engineer shall produce mechanical design deliverables including work packages, particular specifications for project designs. They shall fulfil QA checking and approval requirements for design deliverables where required. They shall menor and afford guidance to Mechanical Engineers and CAD personnel in the production of design deliverables. They shall provide guidance and expertise within a project design delivery team and liase with the Mechanical Engineering Design Manager to ensure compliance with company standards and methods of work.
Functions:
· Produce mechanical design layouts which are cost effective, meet the requirements of the specification and which can be purchased, installed and commissioned effectively. The term 'cost' is to embrace all costs associated with the design and the subsequent construction of the design. To be cost effective the whole out turn cost of the design solution must be considered including design time costs, material costs, erection costs and any impact that the design solution might have on other disciplines.
· Ensure that plant and equipment procured by the department is procured on time and to budget.
· Ensure that standard practices are utilised where ever possible.
· Ensure client specification and standard requirements are met.
· Provide technical guidance to subordinates.
· Provide mechanical engineering guidance to the project team.
· Be familiar with water and wastewater plant, equipment and processes adopted within the UK water industry and have worked within this environment for the previous 3 years as a minimum.
· Monitor design hours (and hence costs) and provide design services appropriate to the allowance available.
· Produce monthly reports.
· Produce estimates and feedback for Proposals department.
· Identify change and its cause, quantify the effects thereof and report to the project manager for compensation recovery.
· Work to QA and best practice procedures
· Assist with updating procedures and processes
· Co-ordinate designs with all other disciplines internal and external to Biwater in order to ensure that the design processes carried out on the contract are co-ordinated for the benefit of the contract as a whole.

PERSON SPECIFICATION
· Have a knowledge of the principles of water and sewage treatment.
· Have a knowledge of designing mechanical aspects of water and sewage treatment plants.
· Minimum 3 years experience in the municipal water and wastewater marketplace which should be current.
Minimum:- HNC Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Degree preferred.
· Good interpersonal skills
· Ability to rationalise designs and produce economic plant layouts
· General knowledge of all aspects of water treatment, e.g. civil engineering, process engineering, electrical engineering and project management
· Ability to understand technical proposals.
