Job Description
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Ensure preoperative checks are made on accepting the patient into the department and prior to the administration of any anaesthetic or surgical procedure.
Prepare the patient psychologically, by appropriate communication and physically by placement of monitoring devices, position and assisting with intravenous cannulation for the planned procedure.
Ensuring that policies and procedures are adhered to in relation to safeguards against wrong operations and correct procedures are followed in the checking of swabs, instruments, needles etc, and reporting any such discrepancy to the Anaesthetist / Surgeon / Theatre Manager or Senior Member of Theatre Staff on Duty.
Respond to, record and report any adverse events or incidents relating to the intervention/treatment with an appropriate degree of urgency.
To ensure that correct aseptic techniques are used at all times.
To ensure the patient is positioned safely and correctly and that diathermy has been applied if required.
To administer medicines in accordance with NMC guidelines, Policies and Procedures.
To deliver high quality patient care which is clinically effective, evidence based and appropriate.
To assess, plan, implement and evaluate care as part of a collaborative programme of patient care.
To participate in integrated governance and risk assessment and it’s reporting as required.
To undertake delegated responsibility for senior staff during short periods of absence.
With appropriate training and support, take charge of a shift without direct supervision.
To participate in the on call rota for the department.
Maintain resources efficiently and effectively.
Organise and prioritise own workload to ensure provision of a quality service.
Keep accurate and complete records consistent with regulations, policies and procedures.
Demonstrate an organised, effective and timely approach to all tasks.
Recognise when colleagues need assistance and offer practical support.
Work in a way that minimises risks to the health, safety and security of self and others.
Prepare appropriately for the care/intervention/treatment to be undertaken including the risks to be managed.
Take the appropriate action to manage an emergency summoning assistance immediately when this is necessary.
Identify and assess the potential risks involved in work activities and processes for self and others.
Support others in maintaining health, safety and security.
Correctly follow routine maintenance schedules and procedures for equipment.
Accurately test equipment and identify any deviations from required performance standards, together with their likely causes.
Determine and implement appropriate remedial action to deal with performance problems take the appropriate action if a fault cannot be resolved.
Correctly and safely install and integrate equipment components
Carry out activities in a way, which complies with any relevant service agreements/maintenance contracts and is consistent with legislation, policies and procedures.
Clean and restore equipment and work areas, leaving them in a suitable condition for future use.
