Job Description

The Company
An exciting opportunity exists to join a successful, ambitious, specialist geo-environmental consultancy supplying geo-environmental and geotechnical advice to the construction industry. The environmental consultancy division undertakes Phase 1, 2 and 3 contaminated land and groundwater risk assessments and provides support to developers, local authorities and individual property owners on environmental due diligence issues, waste minimisation and remediation strategies. The work is very varied, challenging and rapidly changing.

The environmental division operates from two offices; the head office being near Lewes, East Sussex and the branch office in Stevenage, Hertfordshire. The successful person would preferably be based in the Lewes office.

Lewes is a very attractive market town in a rural setting located only 8 miles northeast of Brighton. The office is approximately 1.5 miles from the town centre, which has good road and rail links with London and the national motorway network. We would consider a Stevenage posting for a suitable candidate.

We operate a UKAS accredited Quality Management System and are Investors In People. More information on the company can be found on our website www.AshdownSI.co.uk.

The Position
We believe in training and promoting from within the organisation as far as possible. However, the present post arises as a result of the need to replace the previous head of division and to reinforce our expertise in the environmental consultancy field in support of our increasing work load.

The new Head of Division will be someone who relishes the prospect of a directorship in the near future, subject to satisfactory performance, and who will take an active role in managing the company.

Duties will include the following:
design, organise and manage Phase 1, 2 and 3 environmental investigations; risk assessments and remediation schemes; preparation of fee estimates; project management; supervision, training and mentoring of junior staff.

Client liaison and discussions / negotiations with regulatory authorities will be an important part of this role, as will business development.

The Person
This role would suit someone already based in the East Sussex area, or looking to relocate there, and who has enough experience to be confident in their own ability to arrive at conclusions. We require someone who can stand on their own two feet rather than seek affirmation and with the ability/interest to recognise new opportunities as they arise. The ability to analyse and interpret data and also to write and vet clear, concise, grammatically correct, technical reports is essential.

The successful person must have recent experience of UK risk assessment methods (specifically CLEA) and must also be familiar with other commonly used assessments models, including RBCA, ConSim, SNIFFER and P20, all of which are in use within the company.

The person should have at least 6 years post graduate experience, have a degree in a relevant scientific or engineering discipline and be a member (or approaching membership) of a professional body.

Remuneration
Salary and benefits are negotiable but will reflect the importance we attach to this position.
