There are numerous bar, hotel and chef positions throughout the UK even in a slower job market for many other indutries. Customer service experience is usually necessary for hospitality. Chefs also require experience but the opportunities are excellent to get some first-class international experience.
Live-In Bar Jobs
Live-In employment in the UK has long been a popular choice for working travellers who are known to have great customer service skills and enjoy the flexible work. Almost all live-in opportunities involve customer service and some require you to be jack-of-all trades, from pulling a pint to preparing some pub-food. Most positions provide on-the-job training, as well as providing accommodation and cheap/free meals.
Aussies, Kiwis and Canadian travellers with a little customer service experience will have no trouble getting opportunites outside of London and offer the chance to get to know "the real England". Those with hospitality experience will find opportunities in London easier to secure. Of course live-in bar jobs always includes accommodation and normally some meal subsidy which greatly assists your savings for further travel. Opportunites for couples and individuals are widely available and those travelling mates (or a buddy for you Canucks) can quickly find great UK bar jobs together. For couples, live-in employment is plentiful and can be a great way to experience the UK together.

Service Jobs (Live-out)
Live-out positions are also a popular choice for working travellers and more common in London where the live-in options are fewer. Almost all service jobs experience is required as there is generally no on-the-job training. A big range of establishments exist in Bars, Cafes, Restaurants and seasonally also in Catering. Since accommodation and food is not included these jobs tend to pay a little more than the live-in option. Live-out hotel work will pay upwards from £6.50 per hour with 40 to 60 hour weeks. Tips can also account for part of your income paying anywhere up to £100 per week. In terms of saving a little money live-in jobs often works out better.
Kitchen and Chef Jobs
Opportunites for Chefs in Britain and especially London are numerous and present an excellent opportunity to get some great experience and add some serious weight to your resume. Head Chefs, Sous Chefs, Commis Chefs, Chef de Parties, Cooks and Kitchen Hands are always required. There is a big range in earnings for chef jobs depending on experience Commis Chefs earn between £10000 and £16000, Sous Chefs earn £16000 and £35000 with head chefs and executive chefs earning between £20000/year up to £70000/year for the elite positions. In the UK, tips are also often a part of the overall earnings. Live-in positions also exist in pubs.
