new
Skilled
travellers protest new immigration laws
A new organisation formed by skilled immigrants in Britain is protesting changes to immigration laws that were passed in April.
The group, Voice of Britain's Skilled Immigrants (VBSI) is against the changes that have extended the qualifying period for Indefinite Leave to Remain from four years to five years.
This means that current and prospective holders of work permits, highly skilled migrant permits and ancestry visas will have to continuously stay in the UK for five years, instead of four, to qualify to stay in the UK indefinitely.
VBSI
estimates that the changes will affect over 100,000 holders of work
permit, HSMP visas and ancestry visas in the UK. They are currently
collecting petitions to submit to the UK government in protest and
they have the support of 29 MPs. For more information or to sign

World Cup fever hits
There is no escaping the 2006 World Cup! The greatest football competition in the world kicks off this week in Munich, Germany.
Australian fans are hyped about their nation's first appearance in a World Cup in 32 years and travellers from all over are descending upon Germany as we speak.
Whether your country has qualified or not, don't miss out on the action! Check out the official FIFA site.
If you weren't lucky enough to secure world cup tickets then the next best thing is to grab your mates, some supplies and to watch the matches on the big screen. Odeon cinemas in the UK will be screening England and all final matches for £7.50 per adult and the BBC will also show selected games at big screens at venues in Birmingham, Hull, Leeds and Manchester.

A traveller's
tale scooting around London
Ray, a 23-year-old
personal trainer from Lugarno in Sydney, Australia has been living in
London for six months. He's landed a plum job (where he gets to ride a
scooter to work!) and is looking forward to summer travel plans and of
course, the World Cup.
Tell
us about your scooter!
I'm a personal trainer and the company I am working for has given me a
scooter (moped) to get around London on. I had to complete a practical
driving and safety test but that's it should be interesting navigating
London traffic!
Are you permanent or are you freelancing?
Both. I have permanent hours with one company and I have also set up my
own Limited Company, which means I am also self-employed. It's really
easy to do and means that I can be more flexible with my hours.
And how did you find work when you first got here?
My situation is a bit unusual as I didn't register with any agencies but
instead contacted companies that I would love to work for (like football
clubs). I then sent my CV around and landed work that way, although I
think most of my friends went through agencies. I'm really passionate
about my work and so far the experience I've gained in London has been
great.
Any celebrity stories?
I got lucky and now I have a job where I've trained movie producers and
TV presenters. I trained a journalist who mentioned me in an column she
writes for OK! magazine and the other day I met Harry Kewell who was in
one of the gyms we run!
Have you travelled much since you've been here?
I've been skiing in Austria and also to Cardiff, Prague and Venice. I'm
going to France with my girlfriend this week and then we're going to Germany
for the World Cup, which I can't wait for. After trying for months, we
finally got tickets to two Australia games.
What's your favourite thing about London?
It's a completely different lifestyle over here but it's a good change
of pace. The social scene in London is amazing because there is always
something cool to see: great live music venues, shows and heaps of local
pubs. And there is always football on!
