Nannies / Carers Jobs

London and UK

An illustration of nanny or carer job in the UK

Have you worked as a nanny before? Perhaps you even babysat the neighbourhood kids when you were at school. If you can provide some good references regarding your childcare or general caring experience and abilities then this could be a good employment option for you.

There are plenty of jobs available as either a Nanny or a Carer.

Nanny Jobs vs Carer Jobs: An Overview

Jobs with children can be referred to as Nanny, Au Pair or Mother’s Help. These positions range from live-in roles, where you are responsible for running the household, to casual pick-ups from school, afternoon playtime or evening babysitting duty.

The benefits of this type of job include developing lasting relationships with the families and children, sometimes having the use of a car, good pay and bonus potential, and for live-in work, accommodation and most meals are included. A childcare course or certification is preferred but not necessarily required.

On the other hand, Carer jobs in the UK will generally require experience in looking after elderly, special needs, or disabled individuals (mentally or physically).

However, if you are particularly patient and responsible, and are up for the rewards and challenges, definitely consider this employment option.

For both Nannies and Carers the easiest path to finding great work is through recruitment agencies that specialise in these areas. Rates of pay for Carers range from around £118 to £127 per day.

Training and Certification

Experience providing care services is preferred but not necessarily required as Agencies now offer training as part of the recent Care Standards Act in the UK.

Requirements

Both Nanny and Carer jobs require CVs, references, and a police check, which should be organised before you leave home and must be brought with you.

How to Get a Nanny or Carer Job in the UK Quickly

Finding a placement can take from one day to several weeks, depending on the location and type of position you’re looking for. Job seekers who are more flexible about their duties or job location will usually find work more quickly. Many Nanny and Carer jobs will require one or two interviews and detailed reference checks.

Pluses: Building relationships with the children or adults for whom you care.

Minuses: Potentially long and/or unsociable hours.
